Last week, the Federal Trade Commission reported a new twist on the Social Security Administration (SSA) scam. Impostors will robocall individuals, alerting them that their SSA benefits will end – which is not true. Currently, this scam is the number one scam reported by the FTC with 73,000 reports being documented within the first six months of 2019, equating to $17 million in losses.
If you receive a call with this claim, hang up immediately. It is important to remember:
- The Social Security Administration will never call to threaten your benefits.
- The Social Security Administration will never tell you to wire money, send cash or put money on a gift card.
