Damon Sipe joined SC Telco Federal Credit Union as the Vice President of Technology in early March. As an 18-year IT veteran, Damon has served in various technology leadership roles including the medical, insurance, and service industries. Most recently, he was responsible for managing a team of highly skilled virtual CIO’s, Account Managers, and a Chief Information Security Officer. This team was responsible for the infrastructure, security, budget, roadmaps, and relationships for over 200 municipal and commercial customers throughout the southeast.
“The SC Telco leadership team moved very deliberately through the process of selecting a VP of Technology to ensure we got the best fit – someone with the right mix of leadership ability and technical knowledge and experience, while fitting perfectly into our organization’s culture,” shared CEO, Brian McKay. “I am confident that we have found that person in Damon.”
With a passion to make technology a vehicle for success, Damon enjoys the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our members by implementing technology that will enable SC Telco to provide them the best experience. Fortunately for us, Damon joined Team Telco at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic; thus, he has played a vital role in orchestrating the catalyst of change it has created.
In his own words:
What are your responsibilities as VP of Technology?
My responsibility is two-fold: The first is to make sure that my team maintains a secure and stable infrastructure that allows SC Telco to serve our members in the best way possible. The second is to help create and drive a strategic plan that aligns with the goals of SC Telco.
How has your first few weeks at SC Telco gone? What do you like the most?
Honestly, crazy! Starting a new job responsible for technology during a pandemic has been a challenge at times, especially because the organization was not accustomed to most of the workforce working from home. However, it is the kind of fire I like to jump into, and the team has done an AMAZING job of getting people working remotely. What do I like most? The people. I chose SC Telco as much as they chose me, and that is largely in part because of the people and the culture. I don’t believe that I’ve felt quite so welcomed anywhere else in my career!
What do you like to do in your free time?
When I do have an opportunity for some free time, I love to go backpacking. I’ve backpacked all over the southeast by myself and with friends. For me, being on the trail with everything I need for a few days and enjoying the beauty of the mountains helps me unwind!
